April 24: NYC Letters from the ICU

By Andrew D. Thomas, MD

April 24, 2020

Friends,

Once again, all my gratitude. Your friendship and support mean everything.

On the plus side, the number of intubations has dropped precipitously, the ER is no longer a madhouse, the wave that has crashed is receding at last. The wreckage it has left is incalculable. Today the family of a patient we have cared for with all we have over the last two weeks elected to go forward with a palliative extubation. She will be brought to a sealed room with large windows and her family will look on while the breathing tube is removed and from behind the glass they watch her die.

Thanks to everyone for the masks and the distancing in this difficult time.

Be well,

Andrew
