Attending Trauma

By Antonio Tufi Neder Filho, MD, PhD

Hand Surgery is a fascinating specialty promoting rehabilitation of patients in the main objective. For this, the hand surgeon has at his reach a great variety of procedures that warrant ability and accuracy.

During all of my professional career, I consider my major strength as an orthopedist and hand surgeon to be involved in attending trauma. Among all areas of our specialty, this was the one that I dedicated the most to during my studies and professional activity. Trauma is very challenging. The patients present with distinct lesion of different intensities, and the majority of time, trauma affects patients of the working class that necessitates their rapid return to their jobs.

Applying the different techniques in the treatment of these lesions to obtain a more complete result possible is very important.

I developed, through this, an enormous capacity for work, being always present to attend patients that are referred to me by my colleagues that are first responders.

I believe that an adequate first treatment in apt time makes all the difference in the prognosis in trauma. And this presence of mine is responsible for the construction of my reputation and a large part of my clientele.

Another strength, not less important, is my constant search for knowledge. I never accommodate or think it’s enough. I always strive to learn from the best teachers. New techniques, courses, meetings, and fellowships have always been a part of my personal and professional training, with the purpose of offering the best treatment to each patient.

Knowledge doesn’t occupy space and we all have a lot to learn always. I would like to increase my knowledge and my work in micro surgery. Develop more techniques for reconstruction in severe trauma, with flaps and free grafts. Also including, as a routine, the 3D planning of reconstructions and in the treatment of deformities caused by trauma.

I also intend to increase my work in treating congenital deformities, bettering function and the quality of life of children who do not have access to adequate treatment.
