Calling Richard

By Martin I. Boyer, MD, MSc, FRCS(C)

I was Jim Strickland’s fellow in the winter of 1997. I walked into his office one day, and he told me about a friend of his that was looking to hire a young hand surgeon to be a member of his new Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Washington University in Saint Louis. Strick suggested that I call his friend to find out more about the possibility of starting my career in Saint Louis. I did. The rest, as they say (who are they, anyways?) is history. Almost twenty-three years later, I am still in Saint Louis with my wife Marci (who I met in Saint Louis) and two fantastic children (both born in Saint Louis.) I had never imagined that I would end up outside of Canada, in the midwest, in the home of the 2019 Stanley Cup Champions. Had I not walked into Jim Strickland’s office that day, I would have almost certainly ended up elsewhere both physically and metaphysically.

Marty,
So your view is that the Cup followed you to St. Louis from Canada?

Marty:

For sure that was a game changer for you! It certainly has worked out well! Needless to say the part about the Stanley Cup hurts. We are still bleeding blue up here, now without “Grapes”. At least I am old enough to have seen the Leafs win a Cup!
