The White Coat Investor: A Doctor’s Guide to Personal Finance and Investing

By Justin W. Zumsteg, MD

The book I would recommend is The White Coat Investor: A Doctor’s Guide to Personal Finance and Investing by James M. Dahle, MD.

I have been an avid reader of the White Coat Investor’s Blog (https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/classic-blog/) and that is how I discovered the book.  I initially heard about the blog simply through word of mouth through the physician community.

The book (and The White Coat Investor’s website in general) have had a tremendous impact on my financial life. It has given me the tools to feel confident in managing my personal finances.  I think that this book could be of significant benefit to many of the ASSH community because we receive very little formal education (usually none) in managing our personal finances.  Many hand surgeons who are very involved with financial matters as a result of their involvement with the operation of a private practice could even benefit as the book dispels some widely held myths regarding investing and personal finances.

This book and related website have served as a launchpad for my financial education.  With the knowledge I’ve gained as a result, I am now trying to make sure that our residents get some early exposure to thinking about personal finance and have a lecture with them later this month regarding “starting their financial lives.”
